How Much is Diabetes Costing Your Business?
Despite the trillions spent on health care, dieting, and disease management programs, the sad truth is that diabetes and other chronic diseases are out of control. If you don’t believe that most programs for weight loss and diabetes management are not effective, check out the statistics. They say it all.
- Over 23 million Americans have diabetes (most of them Type 2) and 57 million Americans are now considered to have ‘borderline’ diabetes or prediabetes.
- Almost 6 million people have diabetes and don’t even know it!
- One in 5 Americans is at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.
- The annual cost to treat diabetes in the US is estimated to be over $116 billion.
- The combined annual cost to treat the disease, direct costs ($116 billion – health costs, workers compensation, disability costs and drug costs) and indirect costs ($58 billion in indirect costs – lost productivity, absenteeism, disability and premature mortality) is estimated to be $174 billion.
- On average, persons with diabetes ages 18-64 lost 8.3 days per year from work.
- Annual health care costs for people with diabetes are about $13,243/per person vs $2,560 for someone without diabetes.
How much are diabetes and diabetes-related issues costing your organization?
- People with diagnosed diabetes, have average expenditures of $11,744 per year of which $6,649 is attributed to diabetes.
- People with diagnosed diabetes, on average, have medical expenditures that are 2.3 times higher than expenditures would be in the absence of diabetes
This data is based on a study for the American Diabetes Association. (American Diabetes Association Economic Costs of Diabetes in the US in 2007, Diabetes Care, 31: 596-615, 2008).

Meet Nancy Heinrich – the ‘Healthy Diabetes Coach’.
Hi, I’m working to make a difference in diabetes, prediabetes, and obesity. We can get to healthier weights, control diabetes, and stop prediabetes from progressing to diabetes when we make smart choices and simple changes in our daily lives. I work with thousands of people just like you, teaching what it means to eat healthy foods, balanced meals and snacks, so their blood sugars – and their weights, their blood pressures, and their cholesterol – get to their target goals and stay there.
Who is Nancy Heinrich?
Nancy L. Heinrich, M.P.H. is a teacher, author, and epidemiologist who inspires, motivates, and educates individuals to enjoy healthier lives. She uses her experience in tracking and controlling communicable diseases to focus on controlling and preventing diabetes and obesity. Her extensive public health background includes communicable disease control work in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases, and hepatitis. Nancy is a member of the American Public Health Association and the American Association of Diabetes Educators.
She is the founder of Growing Healthy Kids, Inc., a charitable organization dedicated to using innovative garden-based education for young children to help halt and reverse the childhood obesity challenge facing American families today. Her first love, however, is empowering, educating and coaching people with diabetes to better health and better lives.
She is also the author of ‘Healthy Living with Diabetes: One Small Step at a Time’ and the creator of the ‘Healthy Living, Healthy Eating, Healthy Diabetes’ video.

I love the energy and enthusiasm you bring to the classes! Your passion for health not only with eating but awareness shines through! Your recipes are not complicated, making them easy to prepare and fast. We all know in this day and age that time is short so something easy, time saving and healthy will be appealing! Can’t wait for your next one!”
Lisa BrownTestimonial:
“Nancy’s lecture on making healthy eating choices has been a wonderful addition to my nursing course material. It adds to the students’ knowledge of diabetes, and cardiovascular health. Her visual demonstration using table sugar, and discussion of fiber content in foods is very powerful. Students have stated, “I’ve never had anyone explain, in easy to understand language, how I could help myself and my patients make small eating changes that could improve my overall health”.

“The food quality and taste for all the dishes prepared by Nancy are impeccable! Upon first taste I couldn’t believe how healthy it all was, that was until I spent a few weeks working with Nancy. We’ve cooked together and I must say she practices what she preaches. The lessons taught by Nancy cannot only be replicated with ease globally, they are a way of life for her. She truly is a Master of her trade.”

“In today’s world our children are faced with many choices, among them is eating right.
This can be simple according to the most informative talk I attended given by Nancy Heinrich.
She conveys the ways of food and nutrition for all of us; young and old to totally understand.
We all need to listen to Nancy because it is ‘Time to eat right today, for a healthy tomorrow’.”

“I was blown away by what I learned from Nancy’s lecture. I thought that I had a good handle on eating well for health, and to prevent chronic disease problems. I was wrong.
What I learned will change the way our family eats. Nancy made the process very simple.
Thanks you Nancy.”

“I am thrilled with the practical and easy to understand language that Nancy uses to make this such a useful and easy resource. Even the small size of the book lends to its infinite utility. Because of this, one can literally carry it around for reference while going about ones daily tasks. One does not simply read a book at night, sleep on it and wake a changed person. Rather, life change is a process that takes time, study, and constant reminder to be successful. It is my hope that readers will carry this book on their person, refer to it often, ponder its contents, and make the changes needed to get the proper nutrition so that they can ultimately live longer and happier lives.”
